Frequently Asked Questions

How often should septic tank pumping occur?

Although time frames differ based upon usage, it is a good practice to pump out your septic tank(s) every one to two years to prevent solids and grease from traveling to your seepage field and potentially causing a malfunction.

How often should I clean my effluent filter?

Clean your effluent filter every 6-12 months (depending on usage) to avoid any backups. C. M. Kristman provides effluent filter cleaning free of charge when the septic tank is cleaned.

I don’t have an effluent filter. What should I do?

Not every system has an effluent filter, although they can be beneficial to the overall health of your septic system. If you do not currently have an effluent filter, please call us to discuss the benefits of having an effluent filter.

Should I flush trash down my toilets?

Trillions of living, beneficial bacteria constantly decompose and treat raw sewage in a septic tank. The effectiveness of these bacteria can be impaired if harmful substances and chemicals are put into the septic tank. Therefore, never flush slow-to-decompose items such as sanitary napkins, tampons, diapers, paper towels, facial tissues, adult or baby wipes, cigarette filters, plastics, eggshells, bones or coffee grounds because they can clog the system. Use the garbage disposal sparingly. Rather than relying on a garbage disposal, scrape dishes into the trash can before washing.

What other substances are harmful to my septic system?

How often should I run the dishwasher and clothes washer?

Use the dishwasher and clothes washer only when they are loaded to capacity. Laundry should be distributed evenly throughout the week to avoid overloading the system with large volumes of water. Try to wash one or two loads of laundry a day or every other day to allow for water absorption. Lint should also be removed by a filter or screen on the washing machine discharge hose.

How often should I use my garbage disposal?

Use the garbage disposal sparingly. Rather than relying on a garbage disposal, scrape dishes into the trash can before washing.

Can I plant things near my septic system?

Don't plant trees or shrubs close to or on top of your system. Roots can cause drain field pipes to break or become clogged.

Can I drive near my septic system?

Avoid driving over your septic field or septic tanks. Cars and trucks can crush drain field pipes and tanks.
